Two students, Varun Natarajan and Jacob Ward, presented their prototypes for an app for community clean-up groups to use to mark located derelict blue crab traps for removal from the Chesapeake Bay. Read More... CCRM AWARD: Dr. Molly Mitchell was selected as one of nine national Early Career Leadership awardees by the US Climate Variability and Predictability Program. She was one of only three scientists recognized for her efforts to understand the predictability of the oceans and climate across time scales, advance climate predictions and projections, and quantify/ communicate skill and uncertainty. More... CCRM PEER-REVIEWED PUBLICATIONS: Peer-reviewed journal articles were recently added to the Center's Publications collection. These high-quality research manuscripts cover a variety of coastal topics, including recent studies on boat wake impacts, dynamic design for living shorelines, impacts of derelict crab pots, citizen science, hydrodynamic modeling studies, and more. Each article was reviewed by other experts in the same field for validity and suitability before they could be published. More... LOCAL FLOODING - NATIONAL NEWS: CBS This Morning recently visited Norfolk, VA to produce a story about recurrent tidal flooding and the collaborative citizen science project that is measuring the impacts. CCRM scientist Derek Loftis and other Catch the King partners were interviewed about this project and how it has generated a lot of interest and participation by citizen scientists throughout coastal Virginia to become part of the effort. More... THE PROBLEM WITH SEPTIC SYSTEMS: As we look for ways to reduce pollutants in the Chesapeake Bay, attention has recently been focused on private septic systems. Even when they are well-maintained, these systems will deteriorate over time and can discharge into adjacent waters. This is especially a concern in the coastal zone where shellfish growing takes place in shallow waters. Rising sea level and recurrent flooding over drain fields is only expected to aggravate this situation. More...
