LOCAL FLOODING - NATIONAL NEWS: CBS This Morning recently visited Norfolk, VA to produce a story about recurrent tidal flooding and the collaborative citizen science project that is measuring the impacts. CCRM scientist Derek Loftis and other Catch the King partners were interviewed about this project and how it has generated a lot of interest and participation by citizen scientists throughout coastal Virginia to become part of the effort. More... THE PROBLEM WITH SEPTIC SYSTEMS: As we look for ways to reduce pollutants in the Chesapeake Bay, attention has recently been focused on private septic systems. Even when they are well-maintained, these systems will deteriorate over time and can discharge into adjacent waters. This is especially a concern in the coastal zone where shellfish growing takes place in shallow waters. Rising sea level and recurrent flooding over drain fields is only expected to aggravate this situation. More...
